About EQAT

Our Mission

Earth Quaker Action Team is a grassroots, nonviolent action group including Quakers and people of diverse beliefs, who join with millions of people around the world fighting for a just and sustainable economy.

The Challenge

Climate change is already causing deadly droughts, floods, and other extreme weather. If we do not take immediate action, the results could be catastrophic. At the same time, income inequality is reaching historic heights. Working class communities and communities of color are facing staggering levels of unemployment as businesses and the wealthy profit. We believe that there are better ways of doing things -- ways that can reduce climate change while producing good jobs -- but to get there we need to boldly confront those who profit from the current destructive system.

Our Actions

EQAT uses nonviolent direct action because it works. Direct action has been crucial to the success of every major social movement over the last century. Direct action allows us to boldly challenge power and highlight injustice. As Dr. Martin Luther King elaborates in Letter From a Birmingham Jail, "nonviolent direct action seeks to create such a crisis and foster such a tension that a community which has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue. It seeks to so dramatize the issue that it can no longer be ignored."

Power Local Green Jobs

Believing that rooftop solar power can both mitigate climate change and produce good jobs, in our current campaign, Power Local Green Jobs, we are challenging energy corporations to do just that by making a major shift to locally generated solar rooftop power for electricity. In this first phase, we are demanding that PECO, the local electricity provider, commit to supporting the local economy by purchasing energy from rooftop solar in high-unemployment areas of Philadelphia. This will provide much-needed jobs and income to neighborhoods across the region, particularly communities of color which have faced decades of disinvestment and racial barriers to employment. We are confident that this can be done in a way that is also good for unionized workers, ratepayers, and people’s health. Bank Like Appalachia Matters! (BLAM!)

Our first campaign was BLAM! -- a strategic effort to get PNC Bank out of the business of financing mountaintop removal coal mining. We used nonviolent direct action to shine the light on PNC Bank’s role as one of the primary financiers of this devastating surface mining practice, which has destroyed more than 500 mountains, 2,000 miles of river and streambed, and cost countless lives in Appalachia. After EQAT led a march across Pennsylvania, organized bank branch actions in 13 states, and directly confronted board members and executives, PNC changed their investments policy in March 2015.  Read more about the campaign.
